Immigrants

Darebin’s Australians: Immigrants to Citizens
Darebin Ethnic Communities Council - DECC,
The Connies, The City of Darebin & The Victorian Multicultural
Commission are proud to present Darebin’s Australians
- Immigrants to Citizens.
A celebration & exploration of the contribution that numerous
waves of immigrants have made to Darebin. All are linked by the
common experience of a journey. Many fleeing the ravages of war,
hunger, religious persecution or political repression. Others lured
by a sense of adventure, the prospect of a new beginning, of owning
land, to get married or to be reunited with loved ones. They arrive
with knowledge, skills, memories, traditions, sorrows, joys and
their hopes for the future.
148 COUNTRIES SPEAKING 105 LANGUAGES
Darebin is one of Melbourne’s most culturally diverse cities
with a population of around 130,000 people from 148 Countries, speaking
105 languages. Located in Melbourne’s north, Darebin includes
the suburbs of Northcote, Alphington, Fairfield, Thornbury, Preston,
Reservoir, Kingsbury & Bundoora.

Darebin’s Australians - Immigrants to Citizens has been a
fascinating journey for us. From the Wurundjeri to the Sudanese
we've tracked a social history of Darebin. We combed through Sands
and McDougall archives, old Preston and Northcote Leaders Newspapers
on micro film at the Northcote, Preston and the State Libraries.
We sourced over 30 reference books and conducted over 60 interviews.
We felt like detectives driving around Darebin looking for old fruit
shops, Nissen Huts, market gardens and other historic and contemporary
landmarks. As always with these projects people have been remarkably
generous with themselves, their time and their stories. We would
like to thank everyone who has been involved. It's been an honour
and a joy to work with you all!
Thank you to Darebin Ethnic Communities Council, ( DECC) for its
vision in creating this unique project and especially to Gaetano
Greco for untrusting the project to us.
Thank you to our diligent, dedicated and committed steering committee
who were an invaluable resource. Special thanks to our Artist, Imogen
